Title:
Developing the Essential Components of Literacy: Building Word Recognition using Decodable Readers
Facilitators: Kayla Abrams, Lorelea Frizzell, Lana Demers, SLPs
Summary: Using decodable books in the earlier stages of literacy instruction is important because it allows readers to practice reading words within their current letter-sound inventory, rather than using pictures, context and/or guessing strategies. Decodable text provides visually similar words (e.g., mat/mad) and unpredictable sentence structure to support decoding strategies, which is especially important for struggling readers. Students are then able to read regular, more authentic texts, when most of the code has been explicitly taught. During this presentation, participants will learn about the importance of decodable books and their difference from leveled readers, review the key components involved in successful word recognition, as well as explore tools to evaluate students’ letter-sound knowledge and sources of decodable text.
